Does anybody know if HSS 4x4x5/16 is readily available in most States in A36 steel, question comes because my AISC LRFD 3 and textbook only lists it available in 46 ksi.

Thanks!!!

I don't believe you can get a tube in 36 ksi.

Why would you want to?

I don't think any HSS are available in A36. You can get them in A 500, grade 46.
Whay would you want the lower grade anyhow? Plus, all the tables in AISC are based on 46 ksi yield material.

I am dealing with a client who believes that he is wasting tons of money with my grade 46 specification. That's all. Thanks for your responses.

Then tell him you could use 24" diameter pipe columns (A53, grade B) instead. [bigsmile]

Tell him the cost is the same - regardless. And you know you have done a good job....

Or... you could...

Tell him that you graduated with the top grade in your engineering class, so you are obligated to use the top grade material in all your designs. [ponder]

From his comment, he just might believe it. [peace]

Your client sounds like a "treat" to work with.

Ask your client if it is okay to call them mill and have them run some tube for you're special client who prefers a low grade steel in his tubes and see if they will accommodate you at a fair price. (-:
