How to weld High Yield reinforcement without strength reduction??

How can you weld high yield reinforcing -450N/mm2 without weakening the strength?

Can you weld mild steel to high yield steel? 450 with 250N/mm2

Don't be sorry... I occasionally double post to make sure the proper people are reading the query.

Some high yield reinforcing steel is not weldable. You have to do a metalurgical study or at very least, a carbon equivalency.

If you know the reinforcement supplier, you can ask for the required information. In Australia, our 500 MPa steel is weldable, provided it has been made domestically. Imported, maybe not.

Yes, you can weld a high strength low alloy (HSLA) steel as stated above. Will you alter (e.g. weaken) it? Yes, locally you will alter mechanical properties because of the heat from welding.

However, this local alteration of mechanical properties can be compensated for in design by using a proper filler metal that is either as strong or even stronger in comparison to the base metal strength. Preheat requirements and interpass temperature will help to reduce problems related to welding high strength low alloy steels. The key is to minimize heat input to avoid softening the bulk properties of the base metal.
 
Just a caution about welding that it is best to know what the material is and that the welder know how to weld it. Funny things can happen in the HAZ depending on the constituents.
