I have spent the last 7 years working as a cost estimator and project engineer on pipeline (mostly water / wastewater) and dry utility projects. Before that I got my BS in Computer Science. I would like to pursue a career in the petroleum industry, ideally getting into an upstream role with a service company or producer.
My question is how best to do this? I realize that for training roles, the big service companies and producers hire mostly new grads in mechanical, civil and petroleum engineering. Is there a realistic route to get an engineer's assistant role or training position to work up to production / facilities engineer, or do I need to head back to school for a 2nd bachelor's degree if I want to pursue this? Thanks.
