How to size a strongback?

I am trying to size an I-beam to be used as a strongback when machining a stainless steel plate 1300mm x 160mm x 30mm (LxWxD approx). Deflection is expected to be about 35mm out of the 1300x160 plane.

Q1. Can I assume that the stresses induced by machining are equivalent to a cantilevered beam with a uniformly distributed load (UDL)?

If so, I can work out what the UDL is and find an equivalent point load.

Q2. Can I assume that the combined beam (specimen + I-beam) is also cantilevered with this end point load and see what the deflection would be?

If not, then Q3 would be how else would I do it?

Thanks in advance

Fred

I depends entirely on how you support the plate while machining.

Either using 2 or 3 tabs at each end to clamp on to, or a couple of holes to bolt through.
