I want to reverse engineer a engine casing. I want to model in Pro/e. I have heard the best solution is either to use CMM or scanner to take the dimensions. Can anyone explain whether to use scanner or CMM method. By the way it is a single cylinder, two stroke glow ignition engine.

white light scanner

I think you should get your component scanned by the white light scanner .
There are two three persons in northern india doing it.
the method is good and reliable ,you can even inspect the component with all the dimension no matter how much they are in few hours.
the best part is that you can compare a model in 3d with the original casting sample and get a visual and dimensioned comparision.
