How to put another figure above the current one?

I'm trying to get a map with a small map overlaying it. I tried to use subplot. But it does not work, if I draw the big one first, the bigger one will be lost. If I draw the small one first, the big one will cover the smaller one.

Try "hold on" and see if it works. Don't forget "hold off" after you've finished plotting your two maps.
