Can anybody advice, how to determine the optimum amount of refrigerant (water) in a vapor absorption chiller. This chiller does not have the sight glasses to determine the level in the shell. Is there a procedure to determine this using the operating parameters.

Thanks in advance

You need to determine what the the specific gravity of the dilute and strong solution is with a hydrometer. These are availible from the manufacturer's literature or a Li-Br pressure/temperature chart. this will tell you if you need to add more water or lithium bromide, it's called trimming the machine. when you take the samples you need to have the machine run up to full load, however some mfgr furnish a trim chart for partial loads.

Thanks imok2 for this valuable information but can you explain me further how the whole procedure shuould be, I will determine the specific gravity of the solution, then what? how to get the quantity of refrigerant or the libr solution?

Thanks....

My best advice is to contact the mfg either by internet of telephone and talk with them about your specific problem. good luck my friend.
