We need to find the grain direction on a small piece of AR450 2" thick plate. All edges have been trimmed. We need to bend it and dont want to make the mistake of doing it parallel with the grain direction. Is there any simple test we can perform that will tell us the grain direction other than with metallagrophy.

Are there markings on the plate with spec, heat, etc? If they are painted on, this is usually done in the direction of the grain as the plate passes through the rolling process.

No, everything was basically rubbed or worn off. This happens quite often at our shop.

You may use UT since sound speed different in either direction.

How about cutting two sets of samples in perpendicular directions and then bend them? See which direction allows you bend further before crack. This is your ultimate interest anyway. Tensile test is fine too, but more machining work I think.

Thanks Salmon2, we did what you said and it worked.
