Hello every one,

Please let me know is there any quick method for brining the temperature down below 0 C of carbon steel pipe specimen for Charpy Impact Test.
Hoping for the quick response

Kind Regards

Most labs I've seen use a chilled bath (usually ethanol, but lately silicon-based fluids are popular). Chilling is typically performed with a compressor-driven refrigeration uint, but I have seen either dry ice or liquid nitrogen used to lower the temperature.

Yes we do it like redpicker said.
For temperatures about -20°C we use a ethanol bath in a normal refrigiator (but takes quit long to cool it down.).
for temperatures up to -50°C we use dry ice (carbon dioxide) in combination with the ethanol bath (works quiet quick) and for temperatur up to -196°C we use liquid nitrogen bath for the speciemens.

Thank you very much guys for your very informative replies

Back in the days before safety was invented we used to have a cylinder of CO2 in the lab. The rest of the procedure involved a rag, some heavy gloves, and a valve ... that's all I can tell you without putting myself at legal risk.

BTW, -196C temperature was specified for SS Charpy testing because it conveniently coincides with the boiling point of nitrogen.

LOL Brimstoner. Not many of us left, the ones that are were lucky in some cases.

Even luckier if you still have all your fingers (attached to your hand, not stored in a jar on the shelf).
