How to Align Columns with the Edge of the Slab Without Affecting the Facade Line? 2

Hello, I have a question. In my project, I need to align the columns with the edge of the slab (i.e., align the columns with the beams), and to do so, I must choose one of these two options:

  • Slightly move the columns until they align with the beams.
  • Move the beams, which would imply changing the exterior facade line.

I’m not sure if I’m correct, but if that’s the case, which option should I choose?

Since the columns are most likely going to be placed first, and 'in the proper place'. Can you locate the concrete edge relative to the column locations first?

Typically, architects don't want to change their slab edges and the exterior facade line since that also defines the boundary and area of the floor. For concrete beams with wider cross-section, you don't necessarily have to align the exterior faces (unless you are the architect on this project and prefers that). If that's what you prefer, you can move the columns slightly to align with the beams.

One thing to keep in mind as you do your design is construction feasibility /ease.

I have added a link from AISC website for visual purposes - Detailing Considerations

In Eurocode 8 seismic design for medium ductility, the center of the beam and column is limited to column width at the connection divided by 4 (b/4). (you can't just move the beam to the extreme edge of the column unless you satisfy b/4 ). That's, put the beam at the center of the column and you can only move it out that its distance from the original position doesn't exceed b/4.

If your structure is RC, you can place your beam at the center and you can extend a small length slab outwards up to the column edge. (if the length is very small it will be inconvenient for formwork in construction but its achievable)
