I am in the process of building a spherometer and have completed the base which consists of 3/8" aluminum plate and three pointed steel screws. The screws are at the corners of the triangular aluminum plate.

I am now ready to mount a depth micrometer that I picked up in the middle of the triangular plate to measure the sagitta in the center of the three steel screws. The problem that I have is that I can't figure out how to disassemble the depth micrometer so that I can replace the 4" flat base with the spherometer base that I have fabricated.

The base of the depth micrometer is followed by a nurled section with the set screw mounted in it. It looks very much like the micrometer barrel with the nurled section should just screw right out of the base so that I can drill and tap my spherometer base to accept it.

Does anyone know how or if there is a way to crack this chinese puzzle box?

If you must take it apart, they are simply press fit.

I ended up just screwing it fast to the base with an improvised wooden bracket.

Thank you for answering the question that I asked ornerynorsk!
