This seems to be a problem when I want to quickly check the dimensions of a sketch upstream. Double-clicking used to yield the dimensions of the sketch--now it edits the sketch. Huge waste of time for rebuilding. Apparently the problem is Instant 3D, but I've not seen anything under Help to find and kill this bug feature. How do I disable it?

Jeff,

Go to the Customize Keyboard Shortcuts and search for Instant3D. This will allow you to see the icon you are looking for. It is on the Other toolbar.

Should be the last icon on the right in the command manager tabs. Ruler with a little blue arrow.

Thanks! Since I do not use the Command Manager, I don't see how I'd ever have figured that out. (Instant 3D also explains why features would move with a ruler when double-clicked--very NOT useful for how I do things.) Now to hid the Command Manager again.

Thanks again!

Theo, I would recommend that you immediately forget where the icon is, so you never turn it on again. However, I've had it "conveniently" pop on a couple of times without my prompting, so, rather than hunt all over Hell's creation for an unused icon, I put it on my "S" key shortcut bar. I never use it, but at least I have it there in case...like a fire extinguisher or a home gym.

I have submitted a SR regarding the unwanted enabling of instant 3D. It happens to me all the time when manipulating a ScanTo3D mesh. they have confirmed its a bug, at least in my case.

While I'm at it, I've also noticed the input boxes for things like dimensions is much slower to pop up than in v2007. I've used v2007 for over two years, so I have a bit of rhythm with it. About 50% of the time I type in something like .75 for a dimension, it's so slow, it reads this as 75. What a waste of time. It sets the dimension to 75, hoses my sketch, and requires me to Undo and type in .75 (slowly, this time).

I've also noticed clicks for mate types is often ignored. In v2007 I really didn't have to watch whether the mate was recognized or not--click and go. In v2008 about 30% of my mate type selections are totally ignored--so I have to babysit this area and every once in a while I must actually click Coincident (or whatever) three times to get it to register.

No wonder everyone complained about this release so much. And I've got the advantage of starting at SP5!

Jeff,

Are you changing video drivers when working with the different versions?

Has the Desktop Search/Indexing been restarted by installing SW08?

[cheers]

Jeff, I noticed the same delay that you are seeing while typing. I thought it was the Dell wireless keyboard that came with our new systems along with SW08. I never bothered to mention it as I thought it was local vs. wide spread.

I updated my video drivers to the newest that passed for v2008 (and that allows me to play Fate on this system again--sweet--hey, it's the small things sometimes). Also, I disallowed installation of search/indexing trashware, plus disallowed searching as much as possible within the options. I think it's now set to index only when the computer is idle, but it ought index never.

MadMango, I use a Logitech wireless keyboard, and it did fine with v2007. I'm thinking it's the fade-in effect for the pop-up menu causing the slow-down. Since my last reply I think I had this problem happen another five times. Nice. I'm hoping this isn't an issue with v2009, since that would definitely not qualify as "65% faster".

Thanks Anna
I turned it off in the Features toolbar.
A star for you.
And then like Eltron, (a star for the idea) I put it on my "S" key shortcut bar.

Wow, this really seems to be a more popular bug than feature. Bummer, I was hoping it wouldn't be an issue for v2009.

I'd suggest adding it to the top of your window so that it's always visible and you don't have to go to the Features Tab of the command manager.

A quick way to switch between command manager tabs is to hover over any area of the manager and roll your mouse wheel up or down.

Some times the Instant 3D helps sometimes it hurts Link Dimensions for example. Anyone that says it should always be left on is severely mistaken or doesn't use any of the functions that it can hurt.

Instant3D allows a Cut feature to be changed to a Solid or vice versa which is a lot easier than deleting the cut and creating a new feature. When linking dimensions you can select the extension lines instead of the value to prevent Instant3D from prompting for new value.

Michael,
Now that is way cool. I would have never thought of that is a million years. A star for you.

Sure it's a neat trick, but how often does anyone have need to change a cut to an extrude?

"When linking dimensions you can select the extension lines instead of the value to prevent Instant3D from prompting for new value."
That can be done without Instant 3D.

IMO, the problems Instant 3D created/creates far outweigh the little (if any) real benefits it brings.
