Hello,
I am a light gauge metal framer who specializes in the installation of Alpine steel roof truss systems. Some of my installations require that i have to weld a 3" 10 gauge steel clip to structural steel beams as an uplift attachment. Up to this point i have had to hire a welder to perform this duty, but i need to be able to perform this duty myself to be more competative. The Alpine engineered detail specification calls for three horizontal 1/8" by 1" welds using a E70XX electrode. I do have some experience welding, but I would like to be qualified and or certified to make these welds. Could anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanx in advance.

Contact a local testing laboratory that offers this service. If you can't find one easily, contact the American Welding Society in Miami. They can probably give you the names of someone in your area.

You should be qualified for each of the weld types and materials you wish to weld. In this case, you'll need qualifications under both the American Welding Society's D1.1 "Structural Welding Code-Steel" and AWS D1.3 "Structural Welding Code -Sheet", to cover the structural interface and the light gage steel interface. You will most likely only need fillet weld qualification, but in all positions, since you can't dictate your welding conditions on construction sites.

I would suggest you get a copy of both codes and read through them before you take your welder qualification tests. Many community colleges offer courses that lead to certification as well.

Thanks a lot Ron. I contacted Triangle Engineering, a local AWS acrediting facility and I will be tested next week for both code sections. They helped me out by answering a lot of my questions, giving me tips and some practice material. This is a very helpfull site, keep up the good work guys!
