1. On start-up I receive the err "failed to update the system registry". After clicking ok - the software does boot.

2. Anytime I try to change a feature I receive this message "Unable to open master database due to the following database access error: operation is not allowed when the object is closed"

Any thoughts

1) Do you mean at system startup or SolidWorks startup?

2) Is the "feature" you mention within a SW part?

You could spend a week and find the answer or you could just uninstall, clear out the SW registry, and reinstall and be going again in an hour or so. No extra points here for heroism.

It sounds like a mess in your registry, and I'd bet you've got a hole wizard and / or Toolbox problem to go along with it.

The easy way to start would be to simply delete the local user part of your SW registry and see if it runs ok with default settings. Barring that being a quick fix, I would just plan on reinstalling because it could be a week long research problem.

Lots of things can cause stuff like this. A bad service pack installation, a bad uninstall of some unrelated software, or overzealous registry cleaning software, even antivirus software. I've heard of a lot of Windows user profiles (user registry settings) getting hosed causing problems with SW.

Anyway, the simple answer is to reinstall and "don't ask why".

Don't forget to turn off anti virus when reinstalling.

Instead of a complete reinstall try using SWx repair utility that's an option. But like Chris said, turn of your anti virus. I just updated my AntiVirus and installed SP4.1. The anti virus snagged the swjpegu.dll when I was trying to save a jpeg. GoEngineer said it's a Norton problem because it als snagged iijpg.dll.

Never argue with an idiot. They'll bring you down to their level and beat you with experience every time.

Sounds like a bad installation like you had your Anti-Virus or spyware turned on during your install. Try runnign a modify on your system and turn off the AV and spaywares while installing.
