How can we know the number of solution-dependent state variables when defining subroutine UMAT and the number of variable controlling element deletion??
the material is perfect elastic.

It’s up to you, depends how many solution-dependent state variables you need and which one you want to use for element deletion. Check documentation chapters "About user subroutines and utilities" and "User-defined mechanical material behavior" for more details.
