We have a feild failed EPDM O-ring which is supposed to be cured by peroxide system. But the field engineer questioned it was actually cured by sulphur. Is there a procedure or quick experiment we can do to confirm the vulcanization system? Thank you for any help.

Hi all,

it is possible to determine sulfur or the accelerators analytically (take care: in some rare cases sulfur is also used as a coagent in peroxide cure). But if you have only one ring and maybe need the results for legal purposes (claim), it is a job for a professional lab.

Berti,

Thanks. That is exactly what I am thinking. It seems I can determine if the system has the sulphur. But I might not be able to tell if the sulphur is for curing. Hopefully I can find a lab from another supplier to do the test for us.

Crystal

Smithers Scientific can run the analysis for you. You need a reputable lab if you are going to pursue legal eagle stuff. If you have an OK O\ring have it runfor a control
