I'd like to start a sketch on a face, type some text, then exit the sketch (setting the sketch as shown) and still see the text. Is this possible or is there another way?

Thanks,
Ken

It is not possible to write text to a sketch.

However, you can create a text in drawing (select some truetype font). Save a drawing as dxf (to create a vectors of text). Open dxf-file and copy-paste text to a sketch.

Ken... 2 possible solutions (I'm not sure which one you're asking about)

1. you can do as Eklunja suggested to turn a drawing note into geometry of the outline of the text characters, or

2. you can INSERT + ANNOTATIONS + TEXT WITH LEADER which will add a note in 3D pointing to a face or any 3D feature

Ken, use annotations if you do not need the text to be part of the solid.
