Considering the ongoing tragic events on the Gulf Coast of the US, I have posted an out-of-print technically oriented article on my website (link below). The article, by Sebastian Junger, appeared in the Fall 1992, issue of American Heritage of Invention & Technology. Perhaps this may be helpful for someone working on these issues.

This article answered my original question about the power used for the pumps. I had heard that it was 50 cycle but it turns out that it's 25 cycle. There is still some question whether they have converted to 60 cycle, olde English.
