I am attempting to make an adjustable clamp that has a hinge which can be adjusted for larger or smaller objects. The problem is that I am having trouble coming up with usable concepts. The one idea I have been able to think of is a simple mechanism that you would find in something like adjustable pliers. Was hoping for any thoughts or ideas on the topic. Thanks.

How will the thing be used? What's wrong with the adjustable plier idea?

The way I see it, you need a heavy compression spring in the upper left hand corner on the third lever down. Also, a lighter tension spring, maybe a leaf spring should be made to act to the right on the handle. While it may seem counterintuitive the lower pin needs to be larger than the upper pin because it is in quadruple shear in the Z direction. Are we talking engineering yet? Please provide a sketch with some loads, sizes and dimensions so you can understand my description.
:-)

dh, I'm not sure that I completely follow your description. Maybe a sketch would clarify it. [smile]

dh has it all wrong BA. What he described is a wimwam for winding up the sun.

paddingtongreen....no, he's really close. The only correction I would make is to multiply the quadruple shear in the Z direction by the tangent of the angle produced by the difference in the pin diameters.

We’re kinda pullin your leg here. But, you gotta give us a clue as to what you are really trying to do, we aren’t mind readers as to what you are actually trying to accomplish, or what this whole set-up looks like. You can see the whole picture or imagine it, we can’t see it from here.

Ron:
Thanks for the support, I thought that was about the right solution. Boy, you’re always playing the angles aren’t you, and lots of times going off on a tangent too.

I think the solution hinges on the sketch.

If I'm not mistaken,

You're pulling and twisting his leg about the y axis, as he undergoes temperature stress thru 46 F.

Sounds like a toggle clampe to me...
