Does anyone know of a flexible stick-on label that can be used for emissivity checks at temperatures of 400C to 700C. It might be that the solution is a high temp adhesive and a foil. Any advice would be appreciated thank you.

Brian,

I assume you understand any type of reflective foil will not work. You might try high temperature paint. Even if it burns and turns black you should get a good reading.

You say you want to perform "emissivity checks." Of what exactly the 400-700C surface your applying paint to?

unless you need the exact temperature, just set the emmisivity to .98 and do your survey.

what you may really be interested in is the Delta T of like or adjacent components.

if you really want the exact temp install thermocouples or use contact temp probes.

as for a stick on "label", just use standard black electricians tape, not the shiny plastic stuff they use no-a-days, it has an emmisivity of .98.

Thanks, there are some good points made. My application is one where it is so difficult to install thermocouples or measure the temperature that it won't happen yet accurate temperature determination is the aim. The hope is to install patches with an accurately known emissivity (which can be confirmed by calibration in the lab), then use them as reference points on the "object" under test.

I should add that the emissivity of the labels/patches I hope to find will be around 0.95 @ 400C-700C, so painting a foil is an option.

suggest for accuracy's sake;

take a piece of the material you want to get the temps from,

attach a thermocouple,

paint it with hi-temp flat black paint or mastic,

heat it to the normal operating temp,

view it with your IR camera and adjust the emissivity on the camera to read the same temp as the thermocouple.

eyec,
That's a good idea and I'll take that further. I guess this was a fishing trip to see what ideas might come up to supplement local knowledge. The ageing properties need evaluation too and while we have the equipment and knowhow there are always new ideas that will speed up the process.
