Can anyone provide me with a plug-n-play equation for determining the increase in diameter for a solid shaft spinning at an extreme high speed due to hoop stress, 9or centrifugal force)? Thanks.
 
I think everything you need is in Roark - Formulas for Stress & Strain, under "Dynamic & Temperature Stresses".
 
Thanks Mr. Muffin - but I don't have a copy handy. Looks like an excellent shelf item, though. Any hints until my copy arrives via Amazon?
 
I was hoping to avoid this, but if I haven't made any typographical errors :

For a solid shaft :

Change in outer radius - in

delR = den/4*omega^2/386.4*R^3/E*(1-nu)

where den = density lb/in^3
omega = angular velocity rad/sec
R = outer radius in
E = Youngs modulus lb/in^2
nu = Poisson's ratio
