Hi members

I would like some kind assistance from the members, I am a mechanical engineer but have a civil / geo technical problem.

I have an area compacted with good gravel to 92% dry compaction. If I laid a rigid beam on the ground (140mm x 1860mm) 2,604cm2 on the ground and applied an evenly distributed 170kpa, the total loading would be 4,575 kgs. How much evenly distributed settlement would I expect to get?

It would be great to see your calculations.

Thanks 1503... I would look into a stiffened edge slab type of foundation to help distribute the load and settlement. If 92% Proctor compaction, I would try for something like 100%. It will only improve the bearing capacity... the soil underneath would have to be suitably consolidated.

Regarding the paper that 1503-44 provided.[ ] It starts off a bit unimpressively immediately under its Figure[ ]1, where it says the following.[ ] The foundation stiffness, k[sub]s[/sub], which is illustrated in Figure[ ]1, is conceptually straightforward.[ ] When the beam displaces downwards, the foundation exerts an upwards force, illustrated by the springs in Figure 1.[ ] k[sub]s[/sub] has units of force per unit length along the beam.

No so![ ] The units for k[sub]s[/sub] are force per unit displacement per unit length along the beam.[ ] This little error could be very confusing to our OP if he is completely new to the subject. (The rest of the paper looks OK, but my run through it was very superficial.)
