Hi :

I have a question on the welding procedure . ASME IX is used for the welding procedure qualification but Supervised project under b31.3. Impact testing is required.

PQR: GTAW + SMAW;
Test coupon thickness: 23.83mm;
Deposited welds thickness: GTAW: 5.0mm; SMAW: 18.83

now: we need welding ONLY with GTAW.

I can use this PQR to support a WPS with impact testing, just for gtaw.

Thanks for your help.

If welding is governed by B31.3, the qualified thickness is 1/2 T to T+1/4". 1/2 T is approximately 12 mm. and your max deposited weld metal is 10mm so you could not weld a 10mm full pen weld using your PQR. You would have the same problem under ASME IX where the minimum T qualified is 5/8" (16mm).
