Hi Eng's,

I could need your help with finding standards/regulations about the classification of hazardous areas (WWTP, Sewers, Pumpstations etc.) in Canada and US - if there are differences. Just need to know which class/div applies to which area. Thanks!

I am assuming that you are talkking about electrical hazardous locations. Detailed information can be found in NFPA Section 70, also know as The National Electric Code. Look at paragraphes 500-503 & 505.

The following are examples the hazardous locations.


CLASS I
(Gases and Vapors)
(examples) NEC 500-503 NEC 505
Acetylene Group A IIC
Hydrogen Group B IIC or IIB+H2
Ethylene Group C IIB
Propane Group D IIA


CLASS II
(Dusts)
(examples) NEC 505-503
Metal dust Group E
Coal dust Group F
Grain dust Group G


CLASS III
(Fibers & Flyings)
(examples) NEC 505-503
Wood,paper or
cotton processing. No sub-groups

Check the OSHA regs. for other hazard areas. You also have to consider confined spaces as hazardous.
