I have been trying to calculate the Hertz contact stress in a spherical roller bearing using Roark&Young "Formulas for stress and strain" When I read the background for the formulas used I read that it is not applicable for small differences in curvature between contacting bodies such as in a SRB. Have any of you any clues of how to caculate this?

By the way, how do you measure the contact stress in a bearing?

No doubt you are concerned about load, life, and bearing rating considerations. While the contact stresses are certainly important, and load ratings are largely based on them, you would be much better off just using manufacturers data and formulae for predicting the life of your bearing, or for selecting a bearing based on desired life. The relationships among load, life, bearing rating and operating conditions are complex and the manufacturers' data and formulae take all these variables into account.
