I am working on a retractable stairs concept as a part of an ongoing project called Astrogarden project R&D
As some of you may know virtual reality has not been fully implemented. So we are trying to implement a system that will allow ordinary engineers whom are not a part of large organization to have a chance to have their input.
Instead of using hydraulics and complicated gearing setup it would be great to make use of shape memory polymers, which simplifies the job of construction and keep the final design nearly self maintaining.
The information I am trying to obtain on shape memory polymers is as follows.
A- :What are mechanical properties of shape-memory polymers?, i.e., tensile strength sheering strength
B- Cost per pound
C- Can we use it to substitute for gears effectively and or if it can be tested.
I have a short animation of the stairs as it would be required to function.
So I shall be uploading to our ftp site within a couple of days.
Looking forward to your input
