Help with nuts

Hello,

I am looking for a 5/8 UNF earthing nut. Is there a specific name for a nut with a drilled and tapped hole in the side which I can screw an M3 or 4 screw into for earthing? Or perhaps a nut with a stud welded to one of the faces?

It's interesting that you're specifing something which uses a mix of Imperial and Metric threads. I can understand why you're being specific about the specification of the nut itself since it obviously has to be assembled onto something existing, however being that specific about the croee-threaded hole seems odd, particularly if it's only going to serve as something which will bind either a bare grouding wire or a terminal attached to the end of a grounding wire.

That being said, if this is your requirement, to have something like this with mixed units, I suspect that you will not find a commercially produced item, you may have to have the nut cross-drilled and tapped as a modification to any existing nut. Now if the units of the cross-thereaded hole are not critical, it's possible that something like this might be available as a purchased item, but it might be hard to find. If you're only in need of a small number of these, it might still be best to purchase a normal 5/8 UNF nut and have it cross-drilled and tapped to whatever secondary spec that you need.

John - It doesn't have to be a metric hole size for the cross thread it was just an example really and not something I'd thought of so thanks. I am after just a small quantity and I'm not wanting to pay too much for them as I could just use a 16mm solder tag but I wanted to avoid that whole soldering process really.

Why not just use a ring terminal on the ground wire and slide it right under the 5/8 nut or another 5/8 nut in a jam nut setup?

What purpose does the nut serve? Could you use a shaft collar with a set screw, replace the set screw with bolt of your choice?

mcgyvr - I wanted to avoid using a 16mm earth tag as it would involve a soldering operation which I'd like to avoid. Also I can't find a ring crimp terminal with a small enough hole for the 1.5mm wire.

TheTick - I suppose I'd have to cut a thread in that hole for a decent earth connection. Also I can't find a 5/8 nut with wire locking hole in it.

1gibson - The nut holds a connector to the side of a panel. The connector will need to resist twisting forces when the external connector is attached so a collar is no good either (unless I used a collar and a nut - but unfortunately the thread from the connector is too short).

I had thought about a wing nut. I could drill and tap a hole in one of the wings. Also I could wedge the other wing somewhere to stop the twisting from the external connector... However this sounds a lot more complex than the soldering operation now!

Any thoughts?

Why are you trying to ground something by attaching the grounding wire TO the nut? Why not just get an electrical large amp 1/0 AWG electrical cable 5/8" stud ring crimp terminal, then use a flat washer and your conventional 5/8" UNF nut?

Use a grounding plate (doesn't have to be this big):
