When I try to open a component of an assembly in CATIA V5 it opens the whole assembly. It is only for components with an icon like this:

Components with an icon like this open fine:

What is the difference and how can I make the first component behave like the second?

the white paper in the icon means there is a file for this element.

So the CONSOLE do have a file that contains this sub assembly.

The CHARGER definition is in the same file as the level above.

in order to have a file for the CHARGER, if this is possible, create a new assembly and copy / paste the CHARGER content to the new file, then replace the CHARGER with the new file.

See the component without the white ark representation as a way to collapse a tree. As Eric says there is no file associated with this kind of a component (unfortunately DS uses the word "component" for different purposes...) In Kinematics, using such a component enables to view all the contents as ONE thing.

The two lonely gears is the Component tree element. It's virtually useless in very simple CATProducts. It's use comes in kinematics and other areas.
The second with the white sheet behind is the Product which has DATA behind it. Use these if you want to open the subassy and make useful constraints. (Component has shitty constraints)
