Help with a picutre - is this an old battery?

Can anyone shed some light on this picture I was asked about and give me some information. It looks like an old battery bank but I have not seen this type of cell before.

It is definitely not a 'battery'. It looks like a bank of resistors. Presumably used to control the speed of a hoisting motor in a crane of some kind. Or used for loading/testing electrical equipment.

Why do you ask? If you are going to do any work on this, you need to know a lot more than you seem to know. If you are just curious - then ask someone you find in the premises where you found the 'battery'.

Hi - many thanks for the reply. I was not planning to do any works on the equipment. The query was raised by a building survey and I was just asked to comment on what it was!

OK. These resistors are made from either cast iron, steel or other ferrous metals. No need to be extra careful. No acids, no harmful substances.

What type of building? Industrial, any cranes? Any elevators? Any large motors? (May be wound rotor or DC.)

Many thanks for the responses. It is really useful to get some feedback this being one of my first threads. It is an industrial or light industrial unit i think. Not sure about crances or other equipment though.

I think there resistors as Skogs suggested.
I have seen some like these before only in that case they were in an winding shed for a cable hauled tram.

Looks like a home made load bank. We made one for testing a generator and another for testing inverters. All you need is a Chromalox and Unistrut catalog.
You could post it on the "What is it" website below and get lots of guesses.

The power duct is your guide here. Those large cables aren't likely to go far so follow the duct to whatever needs these resistors. Likely just the other side of that wall.
