I have been tasked with modifying a cast aluminum part and I am trying to match metals as closely as I can. I need to machine a new part to weld onto this casted part. Our metal scanner gave me a read out of:

alloy 1: 384/80/19

Zr 0.003 +-0.001
Ta 0.024 +-0.007
Fe 0.117 +-0.016
Al 90.648 +-0.401
Si 9.200 +-0.304

What off the shelf aluminum alloy best matches what I have?

Thank You for your help

Jerry

Are you sure that there is no Cu or Ni in it?
This is a 4xxx alloy, so start looking there.

P.E. Metallurgy, Plymouth Tube

Since this is a cast alloy, I'm sure Ed meant to say it is of the 4xx.x series.

unless I send the part of for further testing, the reading are the best our scanner can pick up. Everything points to a 4,XXX series alloy, but not my main question is what alloy works best for welding to this piece?

To jseims,
Don't you know what your scanner's detection limits are? That will give good information about the presence of some other elements- its not likely it only detects Zr, Ta, Fe, Al and Si. I have not heard of scanner good with both the high atomic number and one low atomic number element.

You should have it sent to a lab for chemical composition testing.
