I found your note on Helmholtz coil size in one of the threads. It was something like "part needs to be one third of the volume between coils". Are you discussing the lengths, or volumes here, please?

we tried to make sure that the longest dimension of the magnet was no more than 1/3 the coil diameter (diam = spacing). This gives you a lot of forgiveness in magnet position.
If the coil is too large then you start loosing sensitivity.
