Hello techies,

We are using a flat head (End plate) for a pressure pipe and design as per ASME Sec VIII Div-I.

we picked up the End plate design as per Figure UW-13 (d)(Attached the image for your reference here)

In that case, what will be the value of a and b? How can we identify it. Since the inclined angle also not available in the figure.

Also the root gap distance also not given.... please guide on this

Can anyone guide us on this?

Your response is highly appreciated on this.

Kind Regards,
R.Ilanseran

Can you share your design? drawing may help.

No drawing available. It is a general doubt raised when looking into it.

How the value of a and b be calculated & the angle also?

You can assume any pipe with flat head setup as per the Figure UW-13.2 (d)

The answers are on the Figure itself.
a+b not less than 2ts.
a not less than ts, and tp not less than the smaller of ts or 1/4 in. (6mm)

Definitions of ts and tp can be found in UW-13(a).

that is ok, how the inclination done on the shell side & the plate side

See UW-13.2.
Anyway, it's a question for your welding engineer because the answer kind of hinges on the WPS
