I am a mech. eng. with very limited experience and would like to design a heat pump. Where would I start?
Thanks.

Learn everything you can about refrigeration; compressors, evaporators, condensers, how they all relate and what controls are needed.

Fundamentally you need to know the Refrigeration Cycle, you need to know and understand this since designing a heat pump is all about manipulating this cycle.

Then, I recommend getting a job with Trane, Carrier, Lennox, York or any other manufacturer of HVAC equipment to gain first hand knowledge of what it takes to design heat pumps.
