I have a question..In a process of hot bonding two similar metals together
and cooling it to a room temp quickly from 1000 F directly out of the
rolling mill. I have been asked to cool the metal slowly not with such a shock and with no contact of liquid. The only way that I can think that this could be done is to have a hollow roller with a rotary coupling feeding fresh cold water and having the metal ride over it. The diameter would have to be large I imagine and as much contact surface as possible.
The material is .180 thick and 4" wide at 10 FPM.The end result would be a temp, that man handle without being burned.
What is the formula for heat exchange for this type of application?
Any help would be great.
Thanks.

Can you air cool it?

Good luck,

We dont like to use air we have cadmium in our product and dont to create any more dust than we have to.

Radiation might be your friend here.

Pass the web through a box with cooled walls.

This box would have to be consideratly long and real estate is at a premium.

How slow is "cool the metal slowly"?

Good luck,

Any slow cooling method will have low heat transfer rates.
This means very long times and therefore very large amounts of space are needed.
This is physics, you can't change the rules.

If you want to cool faster but avoid thermal shock you might consider blowing low pressure steam onto the plate.

Otherwise a long box with water cooled walls will be your best bet. Then you can use low speed fans to help cool further when radiation no longer helps.
