A client of mine wants to install ductile iron water main using Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD). My experience with HDD is all using fusion welded HDPE piping. These are for two short runs, 50 feet and 100 feet, respectively. We'd specify the pipe using TR Flex restrained joints but wondering if anybody has any suggestions or fore-warnings for this application?

While the successful “trenchless” installation history of iron pipes by various means of construction probably goes back a century or more, ductile iron pipe with modern boltless and flexible restrained joints has been used successfully for now close to 20 years specifically for HDD. Your pull lengths are very short compared to most jobs. See and many case studies e.g. etc.
