is there a way to create an area cross section without the hatching?

Thank you for your response. I am aware of this option. I am hoping there is a faster way. Maybe a config option. I have been unsuccessful in my search.

Another method, (Pro/E 2001)



Select cross hatch area to be blanked, right click, select properties, then select excl comp



Unfortunately Pro/E doesn't allow for global modifications of cross hatched parts, so you'll have to select each part singly and exclude from cross hatching.
