Hi,

I have a 13 inches wheel by 3 inches thickness that got an heat treatment. I want to know if it's possible to get the hardness at 5/8 inches depth to the face, without destroy the pieces.

I don't have a jominy test or a sampler.

Maybe a magnetics or ultrasonic testing can do?

What kind of heat treatment was performed? Through hardening or some form of surface treatment (flame, induction?)

The depth of hardening achieved would depend on the material grade of the wheel and the type of heat treatment performed. However, irrespective of the these it would be impossible to verify the hardness at a specific depth on the actual component without cutting samples from the component for cross a section hardness survey. If this is not possible then you could recreate the heat treatment on test piece using the same material grade. This could then be used to verify the hardness levels at the depth you require.
