Can anyone provide OSHA reference dictating requirement to paint (1) ladder; (2) cage; (3) handrail; (4) guardrail; (5) safety gates; etc. safety yellow. It is generally accepted that these are to be painted safety yellow, however customers are asking more and more for them to be painted to match equipment and plant colors. Then there are applications where environment mandates galvanizing or use of stainless or aluminum for construction. What are the fabricator's obligation(s)in regard to the issue of safety yellow paint. I thank you all in advance for your responses.

Sometimes we have fabricated handrails, stairs, ladders, etc. which are specified to be galvanized. I think that use of certain color or use of other type of coating is determined by the engineer of record in accordance with architectural specifications and taking into account environmental conditions. If the structures are intended to be galvanized, then, their miscellaneous (handrails, stairs, ladders with or without cage, gratings, etc)must be galvanized.
In the peruvian jungle we have fabricated galvanized structures for platforms as part of natural gas plant and pipe racks with appropiated fire protection scheme.
There were 2 engineering firms: One of them specified miscellaneous painted with safety yellow and the other specified, for the same item, galvanized.
Regards.
