G'day All,
I have an old chevy engine from a 1970 Australian vehicle that has had half the engine number machined off the cast iron block.
I would like to know if there is any way of determining the complete number?
Regards
C

Depends on how far down the machining is. There are some acid etch techniques used for recovering gun serial numbers.

The Police used to have a way, maybe xray, to find out if a motor had been stolen and the numbers ground off. Apparently the number punch compacts the cast iron below the imprint and the xray can detect it.I'm not sure tho wether it was just one of those urban myths!!

That is the acid etch technique.
