Hi Everyone
I have to pick a type of anchor bolt (HILTI) for a guardrail in a parking lot, and was wondering if anyone has an example of the design procedure. I went on the Hilti site and their example is not very clear on how to use their reduction factors imposed by the spacing of the anchor bolts and the edge distance. If anyone has an example for this type of design and/or a site where a clear explanation can be found, please let me know.

Hilti changed how they presented reduction factors a few years ago. It can be a little confusing because they provide them in a chart as a ratio of edge dist or spacing to embedment depth. It might be clearer if you had their full length printed catalog to study, which I believe is free for the asking.

The Powers/Rawl catalog is also a useful reference on designing anchors for combined forces and with reduction factors. Powers has a more straightforward method of finding reduction factors, I feel.

Since each company has published anchor capacities that are based at least partly on tests, recommend that you don't mix and match reduction factors. If you are going to use a Hilti product, you should also use their allowable capacities and reduction factors.
