Grouting base plate 1

What is the proper way to grout a base plate for a beam in a concrete foundation pocket? The pockets are 12" wide and 4" deep into the face of the wall. I need to set a plate in these pockets for the beam to rest on. The beams are W12x30 and will support the framing of a new home. There are no bolts to the plate or beam. What grout should I use and how do I set it? What size plate should I use?

The plate size and thickness should be determined by the designer and is based on the beam reaction and the material that plate is set on, one size for concrete bearing and a larger size for masonry bearing.

The reason for the grout is to assure full and level support of the plate, along with even distribuition of the load. If the plate is to be set on CONCRETE and the pocket is level and smooth, then a grout bed is not necessary. If the plate is set on masonry, I always use a grout bed under the plate.

The most commonly used is a non-metalic, non-shrink grout. Manufacturers like Master Builders, Tamms, Chem-Rex and Sika all have good products. Contact their local rep. or go to their websites for product data information.
