Grouping the BOM Parts List

We are in the process of changing the methods in which we manufacture and order all of out materials. I haven't had too much experience with the BOM Parts List so pardon me if I use the wrong verbiage. For simplicity, we have an attribute "Station", which will have a value of 1, 2, or 3 depending on where the component needs to go. If I just add the "Station" attribute to the BOM Parts List, we'll have some components that go into more than 1 station, and so the attributes end up overwriting each other. My idea is to sort the BOM Parts List by the "Station" attribute first, then do everything normally past that. Does anybody have ideas as how to accomplish this? Thanks in advanced!

I have a journal that gives them that attribute based on what layer they are on.

Ok, but if the component goes to multiple stations, do you assign multiple station attributes or some sort of delimited list (station = "1,2,4")?

I.e., how do you plan to sort on station number those components that go to multiple stations? the first station they go to, perhaps?

That is the problem I am running into. At first, I added the station attribute into the parts list and noticed that it got overwritten. What I would like to do is; prior to the parts list counting up the quantities and eliminated all but 1 representation, have it count the quantities based on station. In other words if I were sorting through this in excel, I would have it sort by station, then catalog, and then have it count up the quantities.

I have a better understanding now. At first, I read it that a single component may travel to multiple stations (such as for multiple processing steps). But it appears that each component goes to only one station, however you have multiples of a component each of which may go to a different station. Is this correct?

No, I am in school for 1/2 the year working on a dual major in Computer & Electrical Engineering and a minor in Computer Science. The other 1/2 of the year, I am developing new processes and streamlining/automating old processes at a leading tool & die company. Nothing I post on this forum relates to any projects/homework at school.

Cowski,
That is correct. My apologies for any confusion, it is difficult to explain these processes sometimes.

Cowski,
Any ideas on how to complete this task?

I believe using the apply to component instance option should allow you to have different attribute values for the same component. Just open the properties for the component within the assembly and choose the "Apply to Component Instance" option from the object selection drop down. (see attachment)

DSikes, which version of NX are you using? I can't seem to find that option.

These additional Component Property options were introduced as part of the larger Attribute enhancement project in NX 8.0.
