Hi,

For the sake of some quick layouts using some outline drawings that someone else has produced I wanted to group those items and using the dimension tool, place them in my own drawing. As they are not constrained in any way, (but they are to scale) it seems to just move the line that I'm dimensioning too, not the whole group, which seems a bit pointless to me... can anyone tell me what I a missing?

Regards,

M

Hello M,

Try using the relationship, "Rigid Set".

Toffeet, thank you for that was just what I wanted!

Hi,

Well it sort of worked... how can I then 'explode' that group so I can put some dimensions on it?

Hello M,

You can delete the relationship just like any other relationship.

A big timesaver for when you want to add dimensions and relationships to sketches is "Relationship Assistant". (Tools...Dimensions...Relationship Assistant).
Be sure to select only the dimensions and relationships you need. Selecting all options will keep your PC busy for quite a while.

Hmmm,

I see what you are saying for the Relationship Assistant. However for me the (for example) square that I have drawn and then applied the Rigid Set command to, I cannot add some dimensions to alter the sizes, they are all grey. Changing the value means that it becomes not to scale...

Any ideas?

It is true that only "Driven Dimensions" can be applied to a Rigid Set.

I spend alot of my time on applying relationships and dimensions to the profiles of part features. It is very important to me that the profiles reflect the intention of my design and that it will respond correctly to changes in other features. "Sketch Relationship Colors" is always switched on in order to see when a profile is not fully defined.

In order to create profiles that is robust and that will respond correctly, I make use of relationships, dimensions and formulas. Unfortunately there isn't always a short cut.

In the case of your example you can try to use "Scale".

Hi m4rc,

the only thing you can do is: place the cursor on the center
of that rigid symbol so that QuickPick displays RigidSet,
select it and delete it. That will release the whole set.

To remove selected items only, proceed as above. When the
RigidSet RibbonBar is shown press 'SelectStep' and the
use SHIFT+LMB to click on items to be removed, when finished
confirm by pressing th green checkmark button and leave the
command

I've found no other solution to remove a single element

Hi,

If what you need are just 2D layouts and you can work in the 2D draft environment (or you don't mind copying the modified layout to a 3D file for example), I would suggest trying the command 'Block' in a DFT file (2D model sheet).

The command 'Block' will let you group a set of geometries but within that set (When opening it), it is possible to place driving dimensions.

NB: you can hide those dimensions by moving them to the Auto-Hide layer.

Hi m4rc,

when you've drawn a square and changing the dimension of one line
'moves' just that line you may not have activated the 'Maintain
Relationsships' during creation of that square:

Tools --> Maintain Relationsships

When this is OFF each line is a separate element ...

BTW: The outline drawing that you try to dimension/change can be
made rigid without grouping it. Just use the relation 'Connect'
and connect the endpoints of individual lines. To see any
relations switch on the Tools --> Relationsship Handles
