Grey/black letter print quality with free pdf utilities

Anyone had luck using the free print to pdf utilities like pdf995 or cutepdf? With both of these I get letters that are half grey and half black when printing from WF 2.0. I've moved the pen_weight setting in config.pro all over the map with no success.

I saw a thread from back in January where several folks had chimed in on this topic, but didn't see any conclusions.

I hate to have to buy the $300 Adobe tool if not necessary

I've never had problems with the free tools but in my opinion, there is no substitute the adobe software. I think it is definitely worth the money.

I use PDF995, and have had no problems with the letter printing. I use a table.pnt file (a text file) which has all of the pen line thicknesses in it.

pen 1 thickness 0.02 cm;
pen 2 thickness 0.007 cm;
pen 3 thickness 0.007 cm;

If you use CutePDF, make sure to select the Properties BLACK/WHITE before you "print". I have used CutePDF for hundreds of files and they print well.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all the tips and tricks. Installing Adobe 5.0 made the problem go away.

I'm going to try the "Black and White" option later today and I'll let you know the outcome.

Well...this just gets more interesting. Now that I've installed Adobe 5.0 (the full version), the SAME files that looked bad with Adobe reader 7.0 now look fine when viewed with Adobe 5.0! They still look horrible with reader 7.0. So much for the claim that Adobe guarantees that you know what it will look like for the end reader.
