Has anyone had any experience with Greenheart Timber used as a material for piers. If so please point me in the right direction where I could find material propeties on greenheart, such as allowable bending stress, allowable shear stress, etc...
One thing to watch, there are several varieties of timber that go under the name "Green heart" including Lignum Vitae
The two I searched for are Ocotea rodiaei and Chlorocardium rodiaei which seem to be the most common used in pilings and piers.
These people should be able to give you the information you require. I've bought Pau Lope from them and they have been quite helpful with information in the past.
Green heart, purple heart, and iron bark are all great for pile. They are especially resistant to marine borers. It's got interlocking grain. You can't hardly drive a nail through it. Great stuff.
