Because of explosions, Grain Elevator area is very dangerous area. In my case I have Industrial Plant with corn grain as raw material, where bolt conveyors are used for transportation of that raw material. That is open area, but provided to be classified as Division 1 . How far to go with Division 1 area. How to determine Division 2 after that. How to find articles where all these is described ?
I have API 505, API 500, NEC but I didn't find there answars to my questions.
Thanks.

Hello,

I suggest you do a little more research into this application, if I am not mistaken this is not a Class I area, the presence of explosive dust and fibers from grain, would put you into the Class II, Division I, Group G atmosphere I believe. Look at NEC 500-5(b),(3). Also Article 502 governs electrical installations in these areas. I do not believe there is any restriction as to the rating of areas surrounding a Class II location as there are above and around Class I, Div I locations, (except at spraying and dipping operations, NEC 516), but good practice is to provide a minimal clear zone, (at least 3ft), about openings and entrances to the areas. I would suggest using sealed fittings and fixtures in and around said areas as a precaution, not strictly required by code, but cheap insurance. Good luck with your project.
