can rip-rap/river rock be tested using ASTM D422. THe soil has up to 9" rock. I wouldnt think you can run a sieve on this material, but if not how do they determine the gradation?

ASTM C136 is applicable for fine and coarse aggregates, however labs might limit their upper size limit to 3" to preclude a huge sample size required for larger materials.

We use 'normal' ASTM testing techniques for materials similar to what you have described. For your aggregate size, a very heavily loaded pickup is about the right sample size. A fair bit of work. We have obtained gradation analysis for samples with occ. boulders up to 3 feet, required a very full dumptruck load. Those (7 samples) was a lot of work.
