Governing California Building Code

Is the 1997 UBC still the governing building code in the state of California?

Does anyone know if any local jurisdictions have (or are permitted to) adopt a different code?

I have heard rumblings that California may adopt an IBC code in the future. Does anyone know the status of this?

We are currently using the 97 UBC, or more specifically, the 2001 CBC in CA. All the cities we do work for in southern CA recognize the 2001 CBC. It is my understanding the CA will adopt the IBC 2006 in the near future.

The State of California is in the process of adopting 2006 IBC for the 2007 California Building Code.
