GM Material Equivalent

I have a drawing for Weld Nuts that specifies the material type as GMS218M. G.M. is the end user so I am assuming that the material is a GM specification. There were not hits at all on the internet for this item. Can anybody tell me what the SAE or ASTM equivalent would be for this material?

I think you need to verify the standard. Unless this is a brand new standard, or released from a group that doesn't use the normal GM system, there is no such thing as GMS218M. GM sells all there standards through Global Engineering Documents at:

http://www.global.ihs.com

Perhaps this is a clerical error with typing or writing or transcribing, etc.

That doesn't look like a material spec.

I found GM218M which is a spec governing "Performance requirements for external acrylic ornamentation / second surface decorated"

Contact your buyer or your DRE.

I checked with the requisitioner and the correct spec is GM6218M grade 340. We assume the 340 refers to HSLA material, but we would need to procure it in a Ø 1.25" bar. My initial material source stated that he has never seen 340 HSLA in a bar form of that size. Could he be mistaken, or is the engineer possibly specifying the wrong material?

GM6218M is indeed a material spec. governing "HSLA SHEET STEEL". The 340 refers to the tensile strength 340Kpsi.

This is NOT the correct spec. for bar stock.
