Hello -
I work for a theatrical production company. We are working on an illusion show for a Chinese client. I need to specify glass, size, color, reflectivity, opacity, rigidity, products used in fabrication, etc. I'm looking for an engineer who can specify this glass for me. I have a fabricator I think is pretty good, but I need to tell him what I want. Can anyone out there be of help?

We work with glass and the theatrical/staging industry often. Here are some thoughts and questions that come to mind...

Do you need a engineer to determine strength of glass, connection/hardware design, etc. or are you primarily concerned with appearance, finish, reflectivity for the sake of the illusion? or both?

For the finish, can you work with the fabricator to see what they can supply? get some samples if possible. If you have a fabricator already, try talking to them to see what they could do for you.

To determine glass size, thickness, and rigidity, an engineer will typically look at a few things... your application (is it a wall, platform, suspended from the ceiling, etc.), relevant loading conditions (will a person standing on, under it, near it, indoors vs. outdoors, etc.), connection methods (how and what does it attach to), among other variables

Do you already know if the glass needs to be fully tempered or annealed? monolithic or laminated? anything else the client has specifically asked for?

Hope that gets the ball rolling for you.
